Close board fencing is a term used in the fencing industry to describe the construction of a fence.  Here’s how you can spot the difference.

There are few popular types of boundary fence, the most popular being close board fencing and overlap fencing.

Overlap or Waney Lap is often the cheaper and less robust type of fencing.

The easy way to tell if a fence is waney lap/overlap is to look at which way the boards run.  They almost always run horizontally with one or two thin battons of timber for support in the centre of the panel.

Waney lap or over lap fences can often be found in the ‘Big Shed’ style DIY outlets across the country.  The lower quality timber and the lightness of these fences ensures transportation costs are lower for these national outlets.

Overlap or Waney Lap fences have major drawbacks because they tend to be made with very thin timber.  Firstly as the boards run horizontally, water can easily collect in between the timbers leading to earlier than expected rot and damage.  Cheap low quality Waney lap panels are also prone to buckling or snapping in high winds.

These type of fences although cheaper are often very poor in quality and won’t last as long as a close board fence.  Were fences are concerned cheaper almost always ends up costing you much more in a very short space of time.

Close board fencing – the better choice for stronger fences.

The way you can tell the difference between a close board and waney lap easy.  Almost always on close board fences, timbers run vertical for superb water run off.  In addition the supporting struts run horizontally.  Made of much more substantial timber than the thin strips of timber found on waney lap or over lap fences.

Due to the greater strength built into the construction of close board fences, they are highly durable and superb in high winds.

European style or Continental Fence – designed for continent.

European style fences as the name suggests have been used in Europe namely for more ornamental purposes.  They are mainly better suited to environments that don’t suffer from high winds or excessive rain.  One benefit of European style fences is both sides are equally attractive, however to achieve substantial strength the cost per panel can be quite expensive.

A European fence panel designed to a British standard should be made out of extremely substantial timbers and made to a much high quality than those seen on the continent.  Compared to waney lap, European fences tend to be stronger, but compared to close board they aren’t as strong.
