Spring Fence Spruce Up
Spring is just around the corner the time when the garden bursts into life, time to tidy up and get set for the warmer weather.
Over winter fences take a right battering, from wind, rain, snow and frost. Indeed the effects of the entire seasonal changes throughout the year have an impact on your fences, they are exposed to the harshness of winter whilst having to endure the drying out of summer.
The constant changes in temperature and the rigours of the winds over the year can have a detrimental impact on the integrity of your fences. Your fence provides a back drop and frame to your garden throughout the year, so it follows if your fence is shabby the overall effect of your garden will be too.
As spring approaches it’s important to check the integrity of your fences to make sure they are up to the rigours of spring and summer winds, here are a few things to do.
- Give them a wobble – fence posts and fence panels should be solid and wobble free. If any of your fences wobble then investigate further to check why they wobble. Remember winds in the UK can be strong enough to blow fences down. If a fence wobbles then it could be blown down or worse fall on someone. If your need advice get in touch.
- Check for rotten panels. If any of your fences show sign of rot then they should be replaced. Rot you can visually see can often be the tip of the iceberg meaning fences structural integrity could be compromised.
- Check for rotten posts. If your fences posts are timber they can often rot at the base. The wobble check will help understand if any are less than firm but a visual inspection is necessary to be sure.
- Concrete can degrade, so if you have concrete gravel boards or fence post take a look to see if they are all in good order. Over time water can penetrate concrete, freeze and expand, producing cracks that can structurally compromise the construction.
- Give timber a coat of preservative if need be to add some extra protection and perhaps a splash of colour.
Once the fences are checked out, it’s time to get ready for the growing season in the garden in the clam knowledge that the border to your garden is in great shape.
